The great thing about stores like Walmart is you can get some pretty cute clothes for really low prices. The trade-off is some dip in quality of course, but when you’re paying less than $20 for a dress, is quality really that important? Even if you only wear the item a few times, you’ll get your money’s worth out of it.

This smocked knit dress from Walmart costs just $18, but it’s really quite cute. I love the feminine ruffles on the neckline and the short puffed sleeves, and I’m always a fan of an empire waist. But I especially like the ruffled tier on the bottom, something you don’t see all the time.

The dress is available in four colors: fuschia (pictured), black, dark teal (really more blue) and teal (green). It costs $18 and shipping is just 97 cents. Sizes available are 1x (16) to 4x (26/28).

Is there anything that says summer like a pretty sun dress? I love this pretty colorblock dress from Avenue. The red and orange colors are eye catching and will look great against a summer tan, and it’s casual enough to wear with flip flops on the weekend.

The dress has some very pretty details, including rouching along the empire waist and a ruffled hem. The open, square neck will show some skin without showing too much cleavage. It’s also fairly open in the back to show off your summer complexion. And the wide straps will let you wear a good supportive bra – something not possible with all sundresses.

One of the great things about warm weather is the casual summer dress. This one from Old Navy is versatile, and at only $20, super affordable.

On a summer day, the dress would look great on its own with a pair of sandals. Or, wear it under a lightweight cardigan or casual jacket with a pair of ballet flats. If you’re uncomfortable with the plunge neckline, try a pretty camisole underneath.

The dress ties at the shoulder and has flattering ruching along the slightly empire waist. The dress hits just above the knee.

It’s available in sizes 1X (16/18) to 4X (28/30). In addition to the yellow shown, colors are navy, a white and pink pattern and a multi-colored pattern. Something to note, however: many of the reviewers on the Old Navy site have said the fabric is sheer, especially in yellow, so keep that in mind if you decide to order.

Can I tell you a secret? I adore super-long skirts and dresses, like this maxi dress from SWAK Designs. Not quite formal, but not casual either, it’s the kind of dress you wear when you want to be dressed up and elegant, yet still feel comfortable.

Adaline Dress

Though I personally don’t have the shape to pull it off, this dress from Igigi would be gorgeous on a woman with an hourglass figure. The slightly high waist will emphasize a smaller middle, and the flared skirt will disguise a larger bottom.

The details on the Adaline dress are gorgeous. There’s unique pleating on the three-quarter length sleeves, and the skirt even has pockets. Plus, the subtle pinstripe adds some visual interest to a neutral color palette.

You can wear it with black accessories such as what the model in the photo is wearing, or grab some brightly colored shoes or handbag to make it more fun.

The Adaline dress retails for $120 at Igigi and is available in sizes 14/16 to 30/32.

Ruffled Wrap Dress

I can’t think of very many styles more flattering to a plus-size frame than a wrap. It emphasizes the bust (which many of us are blessed with) and minimizes the waist. A wrap like this ruffled dress from Necessary Objects — which has a slightly empire waist and pleating details — will also camouflage a tummy.

There are so many occasions that you could wear this dress. It’s nice enough for a party or casual wedding , but could also be worn on a date or to go out with friends.

The dress has no closures; it’s a real wrap with its own tie.

See that dress over there? Next to the text? The one with the pretty tone-on-tone border around the hem? Yeah, that one. You can get it for less than $20.

This smocked, casual dress is part of the Just My Size line at Wal-mart. The plus size brand that used to be best known for undergarments has expanded to include a number of stylish, super affordable items. You could go to Wal-Mart with a $100 bill and come home with at least two complete outfits.

This dress is great for these early fall days, when it’s still warm outside but there may be a cool bite to the air. I’m thinking of wearing it with black tights and some calf boots like these from OneStopPlus.
