A couple weeks ago, curvy comedian Mo’Nique won a supporting actress Satellite Award from the International Press Academy for her work in “Precious,” playing Mary Jones, the shockingly abusive mother of the title character. The IPA is just one of the groups to recognize Mo’Nique’s amazing turn in the dramatic role this year. Here are some of the other accolades she’s received:
- Winner, Best Supporting Actress, Los Angeles Film Critics Award
- Winner, Best Actress in a Supporting Role, EDA Award (Alliance of Women Film Journalists)
- Winner, New York Film Critics Circle Award
- Nominee, Best Supporting Actress, Critics’ Choice Movie Award (Broadcast Film Critics Association)
- Nominee, Best Performance by an Actress In A Supporting Role in a Motion Picture, Golden Globes (Hollywood Foreign Press Association)
- Nominee, Best Supporting Female, Independent Spirit Award
- Nominee, Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role, Screen Actors Guild Award
Mo’Nique seems to be keeping a level head about the nominations, telling CNN: “It’s a part of the process but I can’t go crazy with it because I’m also a wife and a mother, a talk show host and a stand-up comic. God willing if it happens, it happens and if it doesn’t, I understand.”
She’s also said that the movie has helped her forgive her own abuser — her brother, who she says molested her when she was younger. This is from People Magazine:
“I know Mary Jones. I know that monster,” Mo’Nique told Joy Behar on her show Tuesday night of her character, a mentally ill, abusive mother. “That character for me, in my life, was my older brother.”

Mo’Nique isn’t the only one getting love for their work in “Precious.”
Newcomer Gabourey Sidibe – who plays Precious – has also gotten her share of praise, including nominations for the Golden Globes, Satellite Award, Critics’ Choice Movie Award, Independent Spirit Award and Screen Actors Guild Award.
